Sometimes, all you need is a change of perspective…

The donkey and the well

Once upon a time there was a farmer who had a disused well on his land. One day he decided to fill up the well and took the cover off while he went off to fetch his men to come and fill it in with all the old muck from the farmyard.

While he was away, his donkey, a curious animal, wandered past and went over to have a look. Unfortunately the donkey was just a bit too curious and fell into the well. Taking one look at the smelly darkness, feeling the sticky mud under his hooves and seeing the light a long way off, he began to neigh and call.

Just then the farmer returned and hearing the sounds of distress, looked into the hole. Now the farmer was a practical man and took in the situation at once. Turning to his men, he said "It’s an old donkey, it’s a long way down and I was going to get rid of it anyway, let’s fill in the well quickly and get both jobs done at once!" So they began to shovel dirt and muck into the hole, on top of the donkey.

As the donkey felt (and smelt) the muck and dirt hit his back, terror gripped him. What made it worse though was the sound of voices laughing as they shovelled the muck on top of him. He cried out even more, "Why me? What did I do to deserve this? How did I get here, in the dark, with shit raining down on me?"

Back at the top, the farmer heard the donkey’s loud calling and urged his men to speed up. After a while it all went silent…

A few minutes later the farmer leant over to have a good look and see what progress they had made. What he saw took his breath away.

He saw the donkey, slowly and deliberately coming up out of the well. As each volley of muck hit his back, he shook it off, stood on it and waited for the next one to arrive.

I asked for strength and I was given difficulties to make me strong
I asked for wisdom and I was given problems to solve
I asked for prosperity and I was given a brain and brawn to work
I asked for courage and I was given obstacles to overcome
I asked for love and I was given troubled people to help
I asked for favours and I was given opportunities
I received nothing I wanted but everything I received I needed.
